Making peace with your body starts with making peace with your parts
Why take a parts work approach to body image healing...
Body image burdens are the painful beliefs, emotions, and stories about your body that you’ve been carrying, often for years. They’re the deep-down convictions that you’re not thin enough, attractive enough, good enough, or that your worth is somehow tied to how you look. Most of these burdens weren’t formed by choice. They were absorbed through early experiences, family messages, and a culture that has long told women their bodies are problems to be solved.
In Internal Family Systems (IFS), a well-researched psychological approach, “burdens” are understood as emotional weights that certain parts of us take on often in childhood, adolescence or early adulthood, in response to painful experiences. A part of you may have learned that controlling your appearances through food felt safer than sitting with uncertainty. Another part may have decided that shrinking yourself would protect you from criticism. These parts aren’t flaws. They adapted to keep you safe. But the beliefs they carry can quietly control your life long after the original pain has passed.
Healing body image burdens isn’t about positive affirmations or learning to love what you see in the mirror. It’s about returning to these burdened parts with compassion, understanding what they’ve been carrying and gently helping them to let it go so they no longer need to protect you in ways that cost you peace.
The Wise Body Hub could benefit you if...
- You've tried to be positive, neutral or accepting towards your body, but parts of you just don't want to jump onboard...
- Mirrors, photos or reflections bring up discomfort, so parts of you have learnt that avoiding them is better...
- You have genuine intentions to practice healthy habits but something keeps derailing you and you can't quite explain why.
- Your confidence holds in many areas of life but when it comes to the relationship with your body, confidence feels so conditional.
- You carry a quiet grief for a body that felt more like home or a truer representation of who you feel you are on the inside.
- Conversations about food, weight or appearance either shut you down or pull you into reactive self explaining, neither of which feel genuine.
- When you fall short of your own personal standards, the thoughts you tend to hear are filled with criticism, blame or fears of failure.
- You reach for things that temporarily quieten the discomfort- food, your phone, alcohol perhaps- but the discomfort always tends to creep back in.
- Your wardrobe has become a physical archive of body limbo- holding clothes you can't quite let go of and clothes that fit but don't feel like you.
- You've considered or tried solutions that promise body transformation, because parts of you hope that if your body changes, the feelings will too.

The Wise Body Hub Founder, Dr Salena Bhanji, talks about the value of parts work...
Hi, I’m Dr Salena, a clinical and counselling psychologist who has spent years sitting with women who are exhausted by their relationship with their bodies.
What struck me, again and again, was this: the pain was rarely just about the body. It was about parts of them carrying years of shame, fear and self-criticism. These were the parts that had never felt truly heard.
That’s what drew me to Internal Family Systems (IFS). Unlike approaches that try to rationalise or restructure the thoughts that give rise to painful feelings, parts work gets genuinely curious about them. And when these parts have a safe space to be heard without judgement of how emotional or contradictory they can be, something quietly shifts.
At The Wise Body Hub, we facilitate a self-guided journey into parts work by providing a thoughtful, structured space for women to explore their relationship with their bodies.
This isn’t about radical transformation or learning to love what you see in the mirror. It’s slower and more honest than that. What it comes down to is healing from the inside out.
If that resonates, you’re warmly welcomed here.
What healing body image burdens could look like for you...
And I said to my body, softly, "I want to be your friend". It took a long breath and replied, "I've been waiting my whole life for this."
